ELECTRICAL INSPECTIONS

Data Centre Thermal Imaging Surveys

Detect the electrical faults that threaten uptime before they become an outage. Live, non-intrusive thermal imaging surveys for switchgear, UPS systems, busbars and distribution equipment, carried out without shutting down power.

Live, non-intrusive testing

Surveys are carried out on equipment under normal load, so your systems stay running throughout the inspection.

Data centre expertise

We’ve carried out thermal imaging and electrical testing across live data centre and server room environments.

Scheduling on your terms

Why Thermal Inspections Matter For Data Centres

Heat is one of the earliest warning signs of an electrical fault, and one of the hardest to catch without the right equipment. A loose connection or overloaded circuit can run dangerously hot for weeks before it produces any visible sign, and by the time a standard visual inspection would catch it, the damage may already be done.

For a data centre, the stakes are higher than most environments. Downtime doesn’t just mean an inconvenience, it means service level breaches, lost revenue and reputational damage that can outlast the fault itself. Redundancy in the power chain reduces risk, but it doesn’t remove the underlying cause, a failing component still needs to be found and fixed.

Thermal imaging surveys work alongside your EICR cycle rather than replacing it, giving you visibility on live equipment between scheduled inspections. Many insurers now expect documented thermal imaging as part of a data centre’s risk management, alongside standard compliance testing.

Data Centre Thermal Imaging Across Your Facility

Thermal imaging surveys are suited to any environment where equipment can’t be shut down for inspection. In data centres, that typically includes server rack power distribution, UPS rooms, switchgear and distribution boards, generator and plant rooms, and comms rooms. Whether you’re running a large colocation facility or a smaller enterprise data hall, the same principle applies, catching problems while the system is live and under real load.

We have worked with TES for years and have always been happy with their service and work.
James Crabtree
Excellent company who helped us out in an emergency. Very accommodating on dates, professional engineers. Great communication throughout and reports compiled in a professional manner.
Luke

They carried out a massive testing job for us on a very active, complex building. It’s hard to find people who are willing to tackle the big technical stuff but still happy to help out with the smaller bits too. The engineers are great and continue to support us with our compliance and installations. 10/10.

Salvatore D'Angelo

The team at TES were great in arranging, managing and performing PAT and EICR reports that was urgently required. I would highly recommend them for their prompt and efficient service

CASE STUDY

Iron Mountain Data Centre

2024
Frankfurt, Germany
1600A busbars

TES Compliance was appointed by Datalec Ltd to carry out a thermal imaging inspection of multiple 1600A busbars under full load at the Iron Mountain Data Centre in Frankfurt. Carried out as part of the commissioning process, our PCN qualified thermographers verified that all busbars were performing within safe operating parameters before the facility went live, with a full written report and thermal imagery provided on completion.

Data Centre Thermal Imaging FAQs

Everything you need to know about our electrical testing and compliance services, including costs, frequency, legal obligations and what to expect from your inspection.

How often should a data centre have a thermal imaging survey?

This depends on the criticality of the equipment, but many data centres opt for annual surveys, with more frequent checks on the highest-risk assets. We can recommend a schedule based on your site.

No. Surveys are carried out on live equipment under normal load, which is what allows them to detect heat building up under real operating conditions.

An EICR is a periodic inspection of your fixed electrical installation against UK wiring regulations. A thermal imaging survey is a live, non-intrusive check that catches developing faults between EICR cycles. They complement each other rather than one replacing the other.
